Mabamba Swamp is a vast wetland on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, just 40 kilometres from Entebbe and an easy day trip from Kampala. Dense papyrus reeds, shallow channels, and quiet water make it one of Uganda's most important birding sites — and the single best place on earth to see the Shoebill Stork, a prehistoric-looking bird with a wingspan approaching three metres and a massive, shoe-shaped bill.

The Shoebill is one of the most sought-after sightings in African birding — a bird so still and ancient-looking that early naturalists believed it was a missing link to dinosaurs. At Mabamba, the chance of seeing one by guided canoe is close to certain, making this swamp a pilgrimage site for birders worldwide. Beyond the Shoebill, the wetland holds over 300 recorded bird species and is recognised as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.

What to Do

  • Shoebill Stork tracking by canoe — guided trips through narrow papyrus channels, with sightings of the Shoebill considered near-guaranteed.

  • General birding — 300+ species recorded, including the Papyrus Gonolek, Blue Swallow, Pallid Harrier, and White-winged Warbler, four of which are globally threatened.

  • Community-guided tours — the swamp is protected by a community-run ecotourism project, with local guides leading every visit.

  • Combine with Entebbe — Mabamba is easily paired with a half-day at Entebbe Botanical Gardens or as a first or last activity around flights through Entebbe International Airport.
