Lake Mburo National Park is the closest national park to Kampala — 3.5 to 4 hours by road — and the most accessible safari experience for travellers with limited time. It sits in a gently rolling landscape of grassland, woodland, and five lakes in the Rift Valley, and is the only national park in Uganda where Burchell's zebras are found. Since 2015, a small population of Rothschild's giraffes has also been introduced.

The park's relatively small size — 370 km² — means game drives are intimate and wildlife encounters often close. Hippos are abundant in the lakes, impalas graze in herds on the open grassland, and predators including leopards and hyenas are present, though nocturnal and rarely seen during daylight. Night game drives — one of the few parks in Uganda where these are offered — change that calculation entirely. The park also has a distinctive cultural history, with sacred sites connected to the Banyankore people and the semi-mythical Bachwezi civilisation still present in the landscape.

What to Do

  • Game drives — morning and evening drives through open grassland and woodland, tracking zebras, impala, topi, buffaloes, warthogs, eland, and increasingly giraffes.

  • Night game drives — some of Uganda's best nocturnal wildlife viewing: leopards, hyenas, civets, bush babies, and porcupines emerge after dark.

  • Boat trips on Lake Mburo — hippos at close range, crocodiles, and waterbirds including fish eagles and kingfishers.

  • Horseback game viewing — one of the few parks in East Africa where you can track wildlife on horseback. Available from age 8.

  • Nature walks — guided walks with a ranger through the park's interior, offering the chance to encounter impalas, warthogs, and zebras on foot.

  • Birding — 350+ species including the African Finfoot, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, and various waterbirds along the lake shores.
