Kibale National Park is known as the Primate Capital of East Africa — a title justified by its extraordinary numbers. The park protects approximately 1,500 chimpanzees, the highest density of chimps in the world, alongside 12 other primate species including red colobus, L'Hoest's monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, black-and-white colobus, and red-tailed monkey. In total, Kibale holds more primate species per unit area than any other park on earth.

The forest covers a mosaic of tropical rainforest and savanna at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,600 metres. It connects directly to Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south, forming a crucial wildlife corridor. At its eastern edge, the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — a community-managed conservation area — provides outstanding birding and additional primate viewing, with 200+ bird species and populations of L'Hoest's monkeys and black-and-white colobus at close range.

What to Do

  • Chimpanzee tracking — the most popular activity, with a 90%+ success rate. Groups of six visitors follow habituated chimpanzee communities through the forest. Standard permit: USD 250 per person.

  • Chimpanzee Habituation Experience — a full day with a chimp group still being habituated, from dawn until they build their night nests. A rare, immersive alternative for those wanting deeper forest time.

  • Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk — a half-day community walk through the swamp adjacent to the park, with 200+ bird species, L'Hoest's monkeys, sitatunga antelope, and black-and-white colobus.

  • Night walks — guided walks after dark to find bush babies, civets, porcupines, and the nocturnal primates rarely seen during the day.

  • Bird watching — 375+ species recorded in the park and surrounding areas, including the African Grey Parrot, Great Blue Turaco, and numerous Albertine Rift endemics.
